PSG signs Leandro Paredes for €45 million from Zenit

Paris Saint-German has taken a big financial risk by buying 24 year old defensive middle-back Leandro Paredes from Argentina. Parades was playing for a Russian club called Zenit from St. Petersburg. It has been the most expensive deal this winter besides that of Christian Pulisic from Dortmund to Chelsea. Ironically Chelsea was also he other team vying for Paredes, but PSG was able to finalize the deal before they could. The deal is until 2023, so Paredes and PSG will have a lot of time and hopeful that he'll be able to make an immediate impact on the field right away especially since PSG was in the market for a solid defensive middle-back to try and strengthen their defensive. After stints in the Italy and Russia he is excited to be able to play for a such a prestigious program for PSG.

  1. I don't know much about the European transfer market but it is interesting that PSG paid this amount for a player that has not yet proven his potential in the best European leagues. I looked up a YouTube of his highlights and he seems like a solid player since he is also on the Argentina national team. Do you think he was overpaid or that Paredes is actually worth the 45 million euros?

    1. Hi Colin, I didn’t know too much about the European Transfer market either until I started working on my blog, it is very interesting. I think 45 Million is a solid price since he is very young, and has proven himself as a great young player. I think that with PSG being in the market for a defensive middle back it worked out for both sides.

  2. I do not know how good Leandro Paredes is but since the deal is for 5 years, Paredes is young and the position PSG was on the hunt for, I think they made a good decision. I think there is a lot of potential here. I'm curious to see what some experts say about whether or not €45 million is too much money? (Jackie)

    1. Hi Jackie, I also agree that PSG made a good decision since he is so young, and for 5 years, so they’ll be able to train him and grow him and have him compete with some of the best in the world. I think that’ll he’ll only get better. I think they paid a fair price of 45 million, and we’ll see as the season goes on if it was the right move.

  3. Do you think that the best players look forward to playing for these elite clubs or if they feel a lot of pressure to now finally be stepping up in to the big leagues. Paredes was able to stand out but he wasn't playing at the same level that he is going to be playing at now. It's also interesting that they are willing to invest so much money into a young player without seeing him play at this elite level. You have to be an excellent observer of talent to be able to scout these kinds of players out as they do not come around very often.

    1. Hi Andrew, I think it is a little bit of both. I think they are really excited to be on such an elite club and play and compete against the best players in the world, but the margin of error with these elite clubs is so minuscule, so you always have to be ready every day. I think as the season goes on only time will be able to tell if he’ll be worth it.

  4. I think this is a good transaction for PSG. Considering their position in the league right now, they are adding a strong, young defensive back that should strengthen their back end. I like the signing especially because of his age, which will provide youth and fresh legs to the club. With an already potent offense led by Neymar, I think the addition of Paredes will only improve the club.

    1. Hi Jeff, I agree I think the key to this transfer was it he is so young. He is only going to get better going up with the best every day in practice. I’m anxious to see what Paredes will be able to do with PSG this season

  5. This is interesting that they are taking such a financial risk on someone this young. They must have extensively watched tape on him and really liked what they saw. PSG is one of the premier clubs in the world and consistently has elite players, so he will have to work hard day in and day out just to see the field. This type of competitive environment is good, though, because it pushes everyone on the team to compete. -William Brooks

    1. Hi William, yes it might be a risk, but with him being so young, and I think PSG sees that there is growth with Paredes that they’ll be able to obtain. Playing defense against Neymar every day is a great task, and he’ll only get better doing it. If you can play defense on Neymar, you can play defense on anyone.

  6. I don't know a lot about the European transfer market but it is very interesting to me that PSG paid 45 million euros for a player that is just getting started in his career and has not yet proven himself. However, since the deal is for 5 years and they paid that much money for him, there is reason to believe that PSG knew what they were doing and would not just go out on a whim for just anybody. I would love to know from someone who is very invested in PSG and knows a lot about the European transfer market to see if this was a good move on their part.
